As we build up with AR god Richard Ussher for the XTERRA World Championship it is worth pausing our interview with him to explain what the race is all about.
Lets put it this way – if you like to rock on the extreme side of sport and life then XTERRA is for you! It’s a race for hard core folk who like to add extra difficulty to their challenges and push even harder. We’re talking serious MARCH territory folks! The MARCH challenge is to encourage people to work harder, aim higher, go further in their life and reach their goals faster. Lets see why XTERRA will do just that….
It’s a triathlon with a difference. A big scary, challenging difference. Every discipline is off road and super extreme.
Lets start with the swim. No dainty little drift here. Carefully positioned on Maui’s Northwest coast to face the biggest swells that famously roll in to Hawaii making big surf heaven, Richard will have to smash through the swell for 1 mile of rough open water swimming.
On to the bike and they head straight for the mountains. Nearly 19 miles of mountain bike madness as they crank through a total elevation gain of 3,000 feet. Horrific climbing that burns the quads to oblivion followed by hell raising descents.
Ditching the mountain bike Richard will then hit a 5.9 mile cross country run. More hills but plenty of technical descents and obstacles to clear too.
Just when the world of hurt closes in they will finish with a soft sand beach sprint, a final climb and the finish line.
XTERRA is the premier off road triathlon. Richard has posted top 10 finishes the last 2 years. And we’ll be backing him to challenge even harder this year!!
